Is your level of success determined by others opinions, benchmarks, opinions and beliefs, or is your future in your own hands?

When I ask top achievers this question in my research they almost entirely say things like “I decide!”, or “Everyone has the power to succeed!” and similar statements.

If this true, why do so many of us allow the beliefs, opinions and attitudes of others to hold us back.

What is it we fear?

Success, failure, rejection, loss, shame, or is it something else …….?

I have just returned from an exhilarating morning at the European Patent Office in Rijswijk, Holland. Today, I was invited to present my Career in Your Suitcase workshop to the spouses’ group they call The Other Half.

As usual, I loved every minute of my time there. As usual, I was in the zone as I stood there and watched lightbulbs go off above the heads of the audience.

‘I am so glad I met you. Thank you SO much!’ said a German after my presentation. ‘This is just what I believe and it so nice to find someone who agrees with me.’

On the subject of what are and aren’t Good Questions, here are a couple of classics:

“Are you still beating your wife?”

What good can you find in this? A friend of mine once talked about looking in the armpits of the dragon and finding diamonds there, an image of finding something worthwhile in the most unexpected and unpleasant of places.

The question that has kept coming up for me as I’ve been thinking about what to write is ‘What’s important right now?’, so that’s what I’m going to tackle. Complicated? No, in fact it is a way of simplifying things. Many of us write ‘to do’ lists of all the different tasks we have lined up in our businesses, work and personal life. Such as?

So, I’m in Birmingham, in the Bullring - more precisely “Selfridges” on Sunday 27th August. They have their Christmas Trees and decorations out now..  “Peace on Earth to all men” in August.

Twas the night before the world knew about PeaceMan. Sitting in his boxer shorts just looking at his clothes on the hanger for the next day. Blue jeans and a black tee-shirt ,an unassuming “costume” for this new super hero to be unveiled on an unexpecting “stressed out” world in just a few hours. Will the world welcome or reject him ?
