For some reason, too many high quality non-fiction books are falling into the clutches of vanity publishers masquerading under the false identity of “subsidy publishers”, “cooperative publishers”, “self publishers”, “collaborative publishers”. And to be honest, when we see a book we would have gladly published properly (with no fees, hidden costs or extortionate markups) it makes us unhappy.

The reason good authors get tricked is that vanity publishers actually don’t exist. I’m yet to find one vanity publishing company that says they’re a vanity publisher! It wouldn’t make sense. But it’s easy to see if you’ve been had if you know what to look for:
